What You Eat Matters, Here's Why

September 29, 20245 min read

What have you eaten today? Yes, a bold question to start this blog, but take a moment to think about what you have eaten today. Did you feel good afterwards, or did you find yourself reaching for something sugary that ended up making you feel worse?

Your body is creating thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of cells every day, amazing isn't it! So what do you create those cells from? Simply put, the foods you consume are the building blocks that regenerate your entire body - brain, muscles, nervous system, digestive activity etc., The food you consume also has a powerful effect on your mental health. So this is why what you eat matters.

There's been a fair amount in the press recently about changes the government have been making to the levels of pesticides and herbicides that conventional farmers are allowed to use. This isn't good for the wildlife, insect populations, the environment, our waterways or our health. In particular the use of a class of pesticides called "neonicotinoids" which have been scientifically proven to be damaging to bee populations.

So this is why I ask - what have you eaten today?

When I’m working with clients the Foundation Principle of Nutrition always generates an interesting discussion.  It often provides lightbulb moments on why they’ve struggled with their health.

I'm going to share with you what "organic" means and understand the benefits of switching over to eating organic food. Not only is it better for your health and the health of your family, but it's also beneficial for our environment and, ultimately, our planet.

What does ‘Organic’ mean?

Organic farming is a system of food production that emphasizes high-quality food, through methods that benefit our entire food system. From human health to environmental sustainability and regeneration, organic farming practices are designed to improve plant health, animal welfare, and the ecosystem at large. In an era marked by climate change, diet-related illnesses, and declining wildlife, transitioning to organic farming will significantly impact our world.

Certifications:

The term “Organic” is often misunderstood.  There are a number of certifying bodies around the world.  In the UK The Soil Association is one of the organisations that are approved by the government to certify organic foods. The farmers who undertake this stringent certification should be applauded, and rewarded with our support as they have to meet tough farming and labelling standards in order to receive their certification.

Health Benefits of Organic Food

More Nutrition

Organic food can contain up to 40% more nutrients than conventionally farmed foods. Essential nutrients like vitamin C, iron, magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus are found in greater quantities in organic produce, which means your body will get more from your food.

These nutrients help the body break down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, making them more bioavailable. This means your body can absorb and use these nutrients more efficiently.

Reduced Cravings and Improved Satiety

Nutrient-dense organic food can lead to reduced cravings and a decreased need for additional food intake. Because organic food is more nutritious, you may find yourself eating less overall, which can be beneficial for maintaining a healthy weight.

Taste and Texture

If you’re more than 40 years old, I know you’ll remember how food used to taste! Try this idea – purchase an organic apple, I bet it tastes just how your tastebuds remember.  This is because organic food often has a better taste and texture compared to conventionally grown produce. Eating organic can bring enjoyment back to mealtimes.

Lower Toxicity Levels

Eating organic reduces your exposure to harmful chemicals found in conventional farming, such as synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers. This lowers the risk of  chronic health issues that are directly associated with these toxins.

Enhances Your Immune System

Organic food is rich in antioxidants, which help boost the immune system. Antioxidants protect the body from free radicals, which can damage cells and lead to illnesses. A diet rich in organic food can strengthen key body systems especially your immune system, helping to ward off infections and diseases.

Cost-Effective in the Long Run

While organic food may seem more expensive initially, it can save you money in the long run. A healthier diet reduces the need for medical treatments, prescription drugs, and dietary supplements. By investing in your health now, you can avoid higher healthcare costs later.

Environmental Benefits of Organic Farming

Sustainable Farming Practices

Organic farming practices are designed to be sustainable and environmentally friendly. They focus on soil health, water conservation, and biodiversity. This helps to reduce the environmental footprint of food production.

Reduced Pollution

By avoiding synthetic chemicals, organic farming reduces pollution in soil, water, and air. This contributes to a healthier ecosystem and helps protect vital ecosystems and wildlife

Combatting Climate Change

Organic farming can play a role in combating climate change. Practices such as crop rotation, cover cropping, and reduced tillage help to sequester carbon in the soil, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Why I choose Organic:

As someone who is passionate about organic food, I can attest to the health benefits. I have rarely been ill and have experienced quicker recovery times when I do get sick. Organic food has significantly contributed to my overall well-being, vitality, and productivity.

For you and your family:

Choosing organic food is one of the best investments you can make in your health and the health of your family. It's not just about the absence of harmful chemicals but about the presence of vital nutrients and the positive impact on the environment. By eating organic, you're not only enhancing your health but also supporting a sustainable and healthier planet.

Think about how you spend money on food.  If you spent less on takeaways, could you then invest in better quality food?  If you can’t switch everything straight away, I recommend starting out with vegetables that are grown above the ground (when in season).  Or how about trying out a fruit and veg delivery service?

I encourage you to explore the benefits of organic food further. Start incorporating organic foods into your daily life and experience the positive changes for yourself. Your body, mind, and the planet will thank you.
